I was hired to help set up an IT department and ended up training as an auditor as well. An airline, a bank, and whatever else came through the door. It is the most useful accident in my career. Auditing teaches you to go and look at the work rather than trust the description of it, and I have never stopped doing that.

Large system implementations for oil, manufacturing, government and banking clients. An SAP R/3 impact assessment at Saudi Aramco, working out what replacing the legacy estate would mean across more than five hundred interfaces. SAP warehouse and materials management at Saudi Cable Company. Oracle Financials at a government finance ministry, down to designing the chart of accounts. A disaster recovery plan for Saudi Hollandi Bank, a joint venture of ABN AMRO. It is where I first saw how much of a system's success is decided before anyone writes a line of it.

Two jobs in three years. First the functional lead on an Oracle Financials implementation, running fifteen business owners across departments and pulling non-value-adding steps out of budgeting, procurement, payments and shipping. Then running the selection of a maintenance management system for the plant, from user requirements through the bid evaluation, including the business case. Heavy industry, where the systems sit alongside a physical process that does not pause while you get the requirements right.

Large delivery, distributed teams, the era when process was the answer to everything. On a call center program for Saudi Telecom, against pushback on cost, I argued for a contingency reserve to air-freight equipment if the Strait of Hormuz closed. Regional conflict made it a live risk, and the reserve paid for the freight. Process is what you run when nothing is happening. Judgment is what you need when something is.

Heading software development for a UN agency of twenty five thousand people across five regions, and writing the standards it ran on: the development method, the policies, the procedures. Running applications for an institution where the stakeholders are countries. You learn fast that alignment is not a meeting you hold. It is the entire job.

Analyzed their market and their competition, then built a five year business strategy and IT roadmap out of it. Set up the PMO and the delivery method, including how projects got chosen and governed. The first engagement where what I handed over was a direction rather than a system.

Enterprise architecture inside the joint venture. A well production system for ConocoPhillips, built to work out whether a site was pulling everything it could. Business architecture for an electronic medical records system at MD Anderson. A technology strategy at LendingTree for building new product prototypes fast and wiring them into what already existed. A ten year technology roadmap for Sonic Automotive that cut the time to add a new dealership by a third. This is where I learned what scale does to good intentions.

We ran the conference as an ART. It worked.
